A Guide to the Best Music Schools in the East

A Guide to the Best Music Schools in the EastA Guide to the Best Music Schools in the EastWhether you have a cellist, a bassoonist, a jazz drummer or operatic tenor, serious musicians look for undergraduate and grad schools with top-notchmusic programs. And just as universities are divided into tiers, with the Berkeley and Yales of the world at the top, and less competitive schools lower down, the stratification of music schools is even more extreme, with the best conservatories in the country nestled at the top of the pyramid. But for many musicians, the better fit is a conservatory on a college unigelnde? or a university with a top-ranked music departement. Like a conservatory, the best of these music schools require auditions, concert and recital resumes and a very different application process from the typical college admissions experience. The key lies in finding amusic schoolthat fits the musicians skills, commitment, and passion. Every major university has a music program, but t he colleges on the following pages represent some of the best music programs in the East. Turn the page to get started, or use the quick links below.New York universities, including Eastman and NYUNew England universities, including Longy and PeabodyMore Oberlin and beyond 01Eastman, Tisch & MorePhoto courtesy of John MerklNot every music school is a good fit for everyone, and thats clearly the case with the final two on this list of eight great university music programs. One is a terrific classical music training ground, the other particularly well-suited to jazz. If youre looking at music schools in this part of the country, then you probably already know all about Philadelphias Curtis and Ohios Cleveland Institute of Music, two excellent conservatories. But these two music schools are part of larger universities, which gives students a taste of classic college life, as well as superior music instruction.Oberlin Conservatory of Music This conservatory, which is part of Oberlin Col lege, near Cleveland, Ohio, is the nations oldest, but thats not its only claim to fame. Its collection of 1,500 musical instruments includes 207 pianos and its students - who are mostly undergrads - have 150 practice rooms and five concert halls at their disposal. Admission is highly competitive - and, like Eastman, one can apply to the conservatory only, via the Unified App, or do a dual degree program with the university. (And if youre interested in this part of the country, be sure to check out the other top Midwestern music schools.)Boyer College of Music and Dance This music program, which is part of Philadelphias Temple University, offers classical, opera and vocal training, but its particularly noteworthy for its jazz studies department, which offers bachelors degrees in instrumental performance, jazz vocal, and jazz composition and arranging, a major well-suited to the demands of a career as a gigging musician. If your jazz musician ever vied for the prize in the Lincoln Ce nters annual Essentially Ellington high school competition, thats a Temple University-sponsored program.Still looking? Dont discount the West Coast, which is home to some dazzling music conservatories and excellent university programs in California and beyond.

The Benefits of Using LinkedIn For Your Career

The Benefits of Using LinkedIn For Your CareerThe Benefits of Using LinkedIn For Your CareerLinkedIn has been around since 2003 and is widely considered the benchmark for professional networking social media platforms. But is the site still relevant, or is it a waste of time? If you dont useLinkedIneffectively, your searches, messages, and other activity on the site can take hours, squandering considerable time. However, when used correctly, and with panache, LinkedIn can perform near miracles for your careers development. Recruiters and employers both use LinkedIn to source candidates for employment, sometimes even using recently departed employees or newly-placed employees for career-networking opportunities of their own. Do You Need a LinkedIn Profile? The short answer is Yes. Even if you choose not to spend a lot of time on LinkedIn, or any time at all, its still worth taking 30 minutes or so to set up yourcompleteLinkedIn profile. Then, make an appointment on your calendar t o check in on it every six months or so, and update with any new, big accomplishments. In addition to those scheduled check-ins with your profile, of course, you should update it anytime you switch jobs. Recruiters and hiring managers use LinkedIn to search for candidates. So, if you dont have a presence on the site, you wont come up during searches.Having a LinkedIn account also means that you can use the site to research companies, interviewers, recruiters, and hiring managers, which is helpful before submitting applications and showing up to interviews. In short, having a profile is a good idea. Even if you are not actively searching for employment, you can use LinkedIn to connect with current and former colleagues and link to people you meet at networking events, conferences, and so on. To engage even more with the site, join LinkedIn Groups. While theres more to know about whether LinkedIn can help with your job search, heres a snapshot of the good and not-so-good features T he Benefits of Creating a LinkedIn Account Aside from your time, its free, although there is a paid option. And for many recruiters or hiring managers, their first step after receiving a resume or job application is to look up the candidate on LinkedIn. More and more companies have moved to standardized online applications, and it is more common than ever to see a LinkedIn section near the resume upload tool, where you can upload your LinkedIn profile right next to your CV. If it is well crafted, this is a huge advantage since potential hiring managers will not only be viewing your resume but your LinkedIn profile as well. LinkedIn is an easy, modern way to maintain a Rolodex of connections that may be helpful in your career. That rolle you met at a conference five years ago may very well wind up working at your dream company, or that colleague from your very first job may know a hiring manager youre eager to contact. With just a quick message you can reconnect and pursue a new lea d. Why LinkedIn Could Waste Your Time and Money While creating a profile on LinkedIn is highly recommended, the site can take up too much time for which youre not being paid. Here are a few things to keep an eye out for It can be pricey- and doesnt necessarily deliver. One of the features LinkedIn offers is Job Seeker Premium. You get a month free, and then there is a monthly fee, which as of early 2019 was $29.99 per month. With Job Seeker Premium, you can see whos viewed your profile and how you compare to other applicants, get access to video courses and salary insights, and send direct messages to recruiters. Premium also allows you to move your application to the top of the list as a featured applicant. However, the recruiter sees a badge next to your name, indicating that you paid for that position. As a social media tool, it becomes easy to lose focus. Like any social media platform, LinkedIn wants engaged users who interact with the site frequently and stay on it. Just as putting in hundreds of applications to jobs that are not a good fit for your experience isnt productive, so too is spending hours scrolling deep down into the profiles of hiring managers. At a certain point, it becomes more akin to browsing Instagram or Facebook than doing any real job searching. How to Make LinkedIn Work for You Start by creating or updating your profile. Thats what you use to connect with people in your network. Your profile is also how you get found on LinkedIn because it contains information about your skills and experience, which are crawled by the bot to match recruiters employer search parameters. LinkedIn wont work for you if you dont identify yourself. Setting up a LinkedIn profile with Private Profile or menschlich Resources Manager (if youre seeking applicants) instead of your name and asking someone to connect isnt going to be effective. If confidentiality is a concern, dont worry. LinkedIn is one of the most private social networks. Connect only wi th people you know well. Be strategic if youre job searching while employed, and dont announce it to your connections. There are ways you canjob search confidentiallywithout jeopardizing your current position. Once you have your profile in place, youll want to invite people to join your network. Start growing your network and writing messages to your contacts. You can send LinkedIn messages to request recommendations as well as for job search and career assistance and advice.

Five Reasons to Create an Online Copywriting Portfolio

Five Reasons to Create an zugreifbar Copywriting PortfolioFive Reasons to Create an Online Copywriting PortfolioWhether youre marketing yourself as a freelance copywriter or youre trying to land a full-time job at an advertising agency, publishing samples of your copywriting online helps prospective employers and clients learn more about you instantly. Heres why you shouldnt hesitate to put some examples of your best copywriting online. Youre Competing With Other Copywriters Freelancers are competing with other freelancers for assignments, and full-time agency copywriters are competing for jobs at different companies.Say a client or creative director visits the websites of two copywriters theyre considering hiring. If one copywriter has an online portfolio and the other doesnt, which of them is the client or creative director more likely to call? If you have a track record of impressive clients, a potential client or employer may take the time to request some samples of your work . But why make them ask? Dont put yourself at a disadvantage in relation to other copywriters. Put your work online. Youre Advertising Yourself Your online portfolio should stand on its own as a solid example of your copywriting skills. Select the best work youve done in a variety of mediums and use those pieces to sell yourself to clients or employers. Think of your portfolio as a personal ad campaign for yourself. You wouldnt drop the ball on a job for an important client, and you shouldnt highlight anything but your own best work to advance your career. Your Online Portfolio Is an Extension of Your Paper One Your online portfolio wont completely replace a paper portfolio youll bring to interviews. And you dont have to completely duplicate the paper portfolio online you can save some of your favorite copy for when youre face-to-face with a potential client or employer. Think of the online portfolio as an extension of the paper portfolio, which should also be up-to-date and ready to go for any opportunity that arises. The online portfolio gives would-be clients and bosses a great idea of what youre capable of without them having to invest much time or energy when they like what they see on the web, theyll be eager to see you- and your paper portfolio- in person. In-Person Meetings Arent Always Practical Of course, there are some situations when an in-person meeting isnt easy to pull off, especially for clients in another locale. Without an online portfolio, you might never have the opportunity to show your copywriting skills to people outside your immediate geographical area. With an online portfolio, the gig could be yours- without having to email lots of files if potential clients request them. Your Online Portfolio Shows Youre a Professional Anyone can wake up and decide todays the day they want to become a copywriter. Having a high-quality website with impressive examples of work will demonstrate that youre a professional and will tischset you apart from the less experienced and the wannabes. Creating a top-notch online presence shows you take yourself seriously and says other people in the industry should do so as well. If you cant be bothered to do that, clients and employers probably wont be inspired to request your services.

TV Consultants Bring Success to Television Stations

TV Consultants Bring Success to Television StationsTV Consultants Bring Success to Television StationsA TV consultant will never have her face or name on the nightly news broadcast. But this expert, who is hired to work behind the scenes, can be credited with transforming a television stations newscast into a program that is successful, delivering higher ratings and mora profits, by having a keen sense of knowing what an audience wants to see. A TV Consultant Is a Market Research Expert Its not common to think of market research and a television newscast being connected. Thats because many people would think a TV newscast simply reports about what happened in a community, while market research is something a company would conduct before launching a new line of cars, cereal or cosmetics. But a TV consultant can look beyond the array of house fires, murders and court cases that make up a typical newscast to find out what an audience wants from a news program. Thats an advantage a T V consultant has by being hired from outside the company she has a distance from the news product so she can more easily ask questions to find out if its reaching its target audience. If a station wants to reach more women in the 25-54 age demographic, a TV consultant might suggest shortening the nightly sportscast to add more health news. A viewer at home might not even realize a subtle change has been made in content, but the station might find that its Nielsen ratings are reflecting the shift by drawing more female viewers, which can be used to sell TV advertisements to them. A TV Consultant Knows How to Use Focus Groups An important part of conducting TV market research is holding focus groups. These are small groups of viewers who are gathered to be asked specific questions about their attitudes toward a citys TV newscasts in general and about the client station in particular. About 15-20 viewers are chosen based on gender, race, age and possibly income. Typically, a TV co nsultant will conduct a meeting with them while the TV stations management watches behind a one-way glass so that they cant be seen. Questions are usually asked to find out how a client station is viewed in the market. A TV consultant might ask in a focus group, Which station has the best newscast and why? or Do you know which station says it has the most advanced Doppler radargert? If a station spent $1 million on a radar system and the viewers say in a focus group that a competing station has a better weathercast, it signals to management that theres a problem, either with the promotion of the radar or possibly with the stations weather team. Focus groups can be asked detailed questions about a TV stations on-air news team. Thats why anchors and reporters are rarely invited to witness a focus group discussion and may not even be aware that one has taken place. If viewers suddenly see a longtime anchor get dumped, especially to make room to hire an anchor from a competitor, that c ould be a signal that focus groups preferred the competitors on-air talent. A TV Consultant Helps a News Team Fine-Tune Its Newscast While a TV consultants work in conducting market research and focus groups is usually kept secret from most people in a TV stations newsroom, she is leise a familiar presence. Thats because a TV consultants contract usually includes working with anchors, reporters, and producers on ways to make the newscast more appealing. For those on-air, a TV consultant provides clothing, hair and makeup tips. In addition, its common for a consultant to coach the anchors on vocal delivery, ad-lib skills, posture, and pacing. Reporters are given ways of delivering better live reports and how to ask better questions during interviews. News producers and writers arent forgotten. They are given exercises in how to write stories that are easier for the viewers to understand, that arent filled with journalese and take advantage of the compelling news video that the vi deographers record each day. A TV consultants work is never finished. In many DMAs, each of the major stations has its own consultant doing the same research and suggesting the same strategies on how to increase the audience. A handful of TV consultant firms control the vast majority of business at stations across the country. Thats one reason why a station that uses Coverage You Can Count On as its slogan as it becomes the top-rated station in its DMA will be copied by countless others which adopt the same motto and marketing plan. Even so, a TV consultant is one of the most important people in a TV newsroom, even if shes never on the payroll.

5 Keys to Composing an Impactful Resume

5 Keys to Composing an Impactful Resume5 Keys to Composing an Impactful ResumeTry this exercise with a friend or loved oneGive the other person your resume, but limit their reading time to six seconds and instruct them to show you how much they were able to assimilate in that limited time. See 10 Items to Banish From Your Resume. Why six seconds? Because thats the amount of eyeball time your resume typically receives when its being first reviewed by human resources staffers or hiring authorities. If you cant convey something that grabs their attention, chances are strong they wont hesitate to hit the delete button and end your chances of being considered, no matter how well-qualified you might be.This fact should influence the decisions you make about the overall look and feel of your resume. How you organize your information, what you choose to include, your choice of words and graphic elements all should contribute to a clear and coherent message that can be grasped in six seconds. Even a simple line across the page can facilitate a readers understanding or detract from it, depending on how it is used. Here are some things you should strive for when creating your resume.Readability. Make certain that even at a distance, your page looks inviting to read and that it is easy to follow the various sections, such as Skills, Professional Experience, Education, etc. Using color to highlight the section titles can make a difference in this regard. Is there enough white space on the page to avoid looking like a solid blob of ink? See 10 Things Your Mom Didnt Teach You About Job Searching.Audience accessibility. It is likely that within your target company, a variety of types of people with diverse backgrounds and roles will be reading your resume. For example, HR, financial and technical professionals all may weigh in on a resumes value. It is important that the document speak to each of them in ways that they can appreciate and value. Especially if you are in a field with its own particular vocabulary that is unknown to non-specialists, make sure you do your best to explain things in a way that can be commonly understood. When you list obscure tools or techniques that you are accustomed to using, take pains to also convey what results or accomplishments you attained by using them.Present your personal brand. It might be that your resume surfaces because it came up in a sourcers search as possessing the right keywords. Congratulations But now, as they begin to read it, a succinct and well-crafted branding statement at the top can truly set your document apart from others using the same keywords. In the top few lines, just under your personenname and contact information, it is essential that you give a helicopter view of yourself, conveying your essential qualities, areas of expe rtise and specific content that only you can offer the employer. Keep it to no more than four or five lines, topsSee Tips for Surviving a Career Transition.Get rid of ambiguities. A resume recently reviewed by your author had this line Devised solutions that produced the desired results. Lines like this convey no real information and leave questions about the candidates ability to communicate clearly. When asked, What were the problems requiring solutions? What kind of solutions did you develop? What were the desired results and how were they achieved? the response was Ill get into that when I have an interview. Sadly, ambiguous statements like these are counterproductive to getting the desired interview, and are likely to sink ones chances of getting to the point of explaining their exceptional skills and talents.Avoid stock phrases and cliches. Expunge what you think a resume has to have if you believe stock phrases like aggressive go-getter, results driven, or excellent communica tion skills are necessary. Youll immediately generate a yawn or a grunt on the part of your resume reader.
